The present study aimed to evaluate the effect of knowing a second language (i.e., English) on learning a third language (i.e., Indonesian). In total, 40 Iraqi learners attending a general Indonesian course were selected and divided into two groups. The first group included 20 students who had different levels of English language proficiency in addition to their mother tongue (i.e., Arabic). The second group encompassed 20 students who only knew their mother tongue. Their final exam scores were the criteria for determining their third language achievement. According to the results, bilingualism of the participants (familiarity with English as a second/foreign language) positively affected their level of achievement in the third language (Indonesian). Therefore, English language proficiency was a key factor for these students’ success in learning a third language. Overall, familiarity with a second language seems to influence the level of competence in a third language.

It is believed that bilingualism modifies one’s perception and social realities as a result of having a broader cultural perspective. In fact, language and culture are intertwined. This effect can enrich writing and improve the effective transmission of thoughts and emotions. Thus, the article intended to explore the bilingual writers’ perception about the world and its realities and identify their perspectives as reflected in their works. To achieve the main purpose of the study, a number of works by three modern bilingual (Kazakh/Russian) writers (i.e., Alimzhanov, Asemkulov, and Seysenbayev) were meticulously analyzed, since various phenomena, events, social realities, and views formed in the environment of the two cultures are reflected in the work. The findings revealed that bilingual writers’ vision of the world can be multi-influenced by their native and foreign languages and that the bilingual cognition adds an extra layer of complexity to the writers’ point of view.

The purpose of this article is to review modern research in the field of multilingualism in terms of the main problems and issues related to the definition of the concept of multi-lingualism, and its main types and elements. The article discusses various forms of the existence of multilingualism and discusses the problems associated with various scientific ideas about multilingualism, a multilingual individual, and its main characteristics. An analysis of the language situation in the Republic of Kazakhstan is also carried out based on the results of the population census 2021, features of the functioning, and interaction of languages in the multinational Republic of Kazakhstan. The article contains quantitative data related to the composition of the population; the level of proficiency in the Kazakh, Russian, and English languages as well as the language of their ethnic group; the level of trilingual proficiency of the population (Kazakh, Russian, and English); the specifics of the development of the state language on the Internet, etc.

The purpose of this study was to identify the features of the transmission of the semantic structure of speech in English and Russian when translating using the example of monorgem and direme, and also to ensure consistency between them. The following methods were used during the research: analysis and synthesis, comparative analysis and descriptive method, as well as adequate translation. An analysis of the current state of translation in the English-Russian sphere has shown that at the moment when translating texts, there are some difficulties associated with semantic, linguistic, and cultural differences between the two languages. It was concluded that any transformations made during the translation of a text are aimed at overcoming the differences in the communicative structure of English and Russian utterances. The practical significance of the study is determined by the fact that these recommendations for the translation of monorgem and directives can be used in translation activities.
