This study analyzes Biden’s political speech on raising governmental funds as a macro speech act which instantiates the speaker’s purpose behind this discourse. It draws insights from some pragmatics and discourse analysis theories, developed by Austin, Searle, and Van Dijk, as a point of departure to develop an analytical framework with two levels (micro and macro levels) to analyze this political discourse. Despite a great deal of research conducted on speech acts from a pragmatic perspective, very few studies examined speech acts existing in a connected manner (a sequence of speech acts) in political discourse. This study bridges pragmatics and discourse analysis claiming that directives complement expressives, assertives, and commissives. This complementary between these classes built the speaker’s authoritative, affective, persuasive, responsible, and supportive identity that enables him to present his perspective effectively and appealingly. These acts blend into this discourse to form a macro speech act. This macro act represents the intended speaker’s purpose behind this discourse.

Studies on presidential debates provide evidence that the use of boosters helps to convey strong emphasis on candidates’ ideology. This persuasive strategy is best portrayed through the schematic structure of presidential debates. Therefore, this study aims to scrutinize the boosters’ functions realized in the first American Presidential Debate 2020. This is a qualitative study with a pragmatic approach that investigates booster’s functions using the domain, taxonomy, and componential analysis. The linguistic evidence in the result shows the candidates exploited several intensifiers largely, including force indication, source tagging, accentuating, and solidarity markers. These boosters emphasize the strength of past deeds, criticizing past policies to promote definite proposals, expose repetitive emotional expression, and seek solidarity in the thesis stage. Meanwhile, in the argument stage, they function as devices for articulating offensive and defensive arguments. The results imply the essential functions of boosters in the persuasive political discourse of presidential debate viewed from its communicative purpose reflected in each schematic structure.

This study analyzes the communicative behavior of politicians and the features of the Ukrainian-language political discourse implementation in the political space of Ukraine. This work studied about 8,000 microtexts taken from the political texts of Ukrainian politicians such as Poroshenko, Tymoshenko, Yanukovych, and Yushchenko for the period between 2004 and 2018. The selected microtexts were then analyzed using general scientific methods and structural semantics, linguo-communicative and discourse methods, and quantitative and qualitative analyses. The results demonstrated that in the Ukrainian-language political discourse, the binary opposition “own↔alien” is employed for manipulative influence and various cognitive scenarios. On the basis of the communication features of each of the interviewed politicians, we managed to determine that Ukrainian politicians adhere to four types of communicative behavior: conflict (Tymoshenko), conflict-neutral (Yushchenko), conflict-cooperative (Poroshenko), and cooperative-conflict (Yanukovych). The study enabled determining the features of the Ukrainian-language political discourse and the political space of Ukraine and characterizing the tiers of the communicative behavior of politicians in modern Ukraine.

This study investigates the representation of ordinary people in the inaugural speeches of two Iranian presidents and their underlying ideologies through the lens of Critical Discourse Analysis (CDA). An aggregate model integrating Fairclough’s three-dimensional (1989), Van Dijk’s socio-cognitive (1993), and Van Leeuwen’s socio-semantic (1996) approaches to CDA was proposed and applied as the analytical tool. Both quantitative and qualitative techniques were employed for the study design. In the quantitative part, statistically significant differences in the use of vocabulary items and structures were investigated based on the description stage of Fairclough’s and van Leeuwen’s frameworks. In the qualitative part of the study, attempts were made to justify the found similarities and differences based on the interpretation and explanation stages of Fairclough’s and van Dijk’s frameworks. The study showed that in spite of differences in the presentation of political self, both presidents design similar strategies in their political discourse to project the identity of common people within their sociocultural context.

Due to the significance of multiculturalism in politics, and the central role linguistic devices play in organizing the political discourse, this text-based qualitative study was carried out to compare political interviews in the Iranian and English contexts to find out the probable similarities and differences in the use of discourse markers (DMs) between the two cultures. To this end, three sets of interviews were selected, and the DMs used in those interviews were identified and classified based on the framework proposed by Fung and Carter (2007). The results revealed that along with the similarities, some differences were present in the use of DMs among the interviewees. Such differences can be attributed to the cultural differences between the interviewees and their communicative purposes. The findings of the study help us understand the importance of DMs in organizing institutional discourse and intercultural inconsistencies that exist between Iranian and English-speaking politicians.
