Ecotourism is one form of nature-based responsible travel that preserves environment and its natural areas. The International Ecotourism Society (TIES) is the inaugural American non-lucrative institution dedicating its efforts to cultivate the ideals and principles of ecotourism. What is intriguing about TIES homepage is that it deploys multimodal units in ensembles to explicate human-nature relationship. Moreover, the TIES homepage illustrates a kind of semiotic complexity in communicating ecological and touristic issues and this asserts the significance of this homepage at two interrelated levels: genre level and mode level. Accordingly, the paper presents a multimodal visual social semiotic analysis of the TIES homepage’s hypertextuality based on a hybrid of multimodal semiotic frameworks, namely genre analysis, layout analysis, and image analysis. The findings formulate that TIES is viewed as a typical discursive practice as it expounds how the interplay of different semiotic resources construe social practices and reflect social realities relating to environmental threats and values.

Investigations on kidungan, a form of traditional Javanese poetry, have been gaining momentum. However, there is a lack of comprehensive reports exploring the value of Javanese cultural wisdom in relation to social dimensions, symbolic politics, and educational values as reflected in kidungan. This study aims to address this gap by delving into the social dimension, symbolic politics, and educational value embedded in traditional Javanese poetry, specifically in kidungan ludruk. The research data for this study is sourced from ludruk performances broadcasted by Radi Republik Indonesia (RRI) East Java and expert interviews. The data collected were then analyzed using qualitative descriptive techniques, employing an ethnolinguistic research approach. The findings of this study revealed that ludruk kidungan serves as a social representation of traditional society, encompassing various aspects of social dimensions, symbolic politics, and educational values. An important implication of this study is that kidungan has the potential to contribute to the development of sustainable knowledge, particularly in the fields of culture, politics, and education.

Subtitling is one of the most widely used translation practices in the localization of video games and enjoys great popularity among end-users. Given the language-bound nature of subtitling practices, the present study seeks to shed light on the subtitling practices followed in Persian game localization and empirically provide a descriptive account of how game localization is carried out in the Iranian context. To this end, five video games were tested and played by the authors, and 300 subtitle segments were extracted from each title (totaling 1500 subtitle segments) and their respective translations in localized versions (totaling 3000 segments). Subtitles were analyzed in terms of subtitle length and segmentation, font (size adjustability, type, color, and background), character identification, sound effects, emotions, and line breaks. It was revealed that the Persian localized versions were very similar to the original regarding font, character identification, sound effects, and emotions. However, subtitle length and segmentation varied between the original and localized game versions.

This research aims to deconstruct the Management Control System (MCS) concept using the cultural framework of Catur Purusa Artha (CPA) in Hindu philosophy. Balinese people believe that culture is always inherent in all their activities. Adopting a postmodern paradigm and a binary opposition synergy methodology inspired by Lyotard's perspective, the study produces a CPA-based Management Control concept, which consists of four parts. In the first part, the Dharma element finds a sense of family, open management, and communication, which are synergized with the Standard Operational Procedures (SOP). In the second part of the Artha element, there is fairness and efforts concerning employee performance measures and work plans, budgets, and expenditures. The third part contains various desires in the Kama element, expressed as integrity, empathy, and trust in synergy with implementation. The final part is the estuary of the goal, namely honesty and a sense of belonging from the elements of Moksa, which is a synergy of reporting, supervision, and audit.

This study investigated the utilization of visual communication in e-learning within higher education institutions, commencing with the formal initiation of the e-learning program in March 2020 and extending through September 2022. The researchers utilized Bloom’s taxonomy framework to assess the effectiveness of hybrid learning approaches in practical education, focusing on knowledge, skills, and competencies. This study used an experimental methodology to examine the potential advantages of utilizing e-learning platforms for visual communication students in their acquisition of applicable materials. In their empirical study, researchers tracked two groups of twenty students: experimental and control. The results revealed that there was statistically significant improvement for the experimental group after the changes were implemented, which suggests that the methods used were effective. Therefore, scholars must dig further into these questions and design novel approaches to e-learning if it is to become a standard teaching method, especially in higher education.

Higher education’s independent curriculum and mainstreaming are studied using mixed techniques. This qualitative and quantitative study examines how social mainstreaming in curriculum construction affects educational outcomes and social involvement. Focus groups and in-depth interviews with curriculum developers, educators, and students comprised qualitative research. Understanding social mainstreaming perspectives, experiences, and curriculum design was the goal. Using survey and institu-tional data, we measured independent curricular social mainstreaming frequency and impacts. Social mainstreaming promotes inclusive, equitable, and socially conscious learning. Integration improves student progress and societal responsibility. Research demonstrates variable social mainstreaming effects in independent curricular development, requiring a focused approach. Resource restrictions, change unwillingness, and mainstreaming ignorance complicate implementation. Higher education institutions, policymakers, and educators seeking socially meaningful and effective programs are affected by this study. The recommendations to promote higher education social mainstreaming showed that curriculum influences students' social attitudes, promoting social transformation.

This paper briefly introduces Bakhtin’s dialogism and the two basic concepts of the self and others. A detailed descriptive analysis of Lin Yutang’s translation reveals that Lin Yutang displays his dialogic consciousness in his awareness of others, which can be drawn from his statement about the translator’s responsibilities, namely, the responsibility for the author, the reader, the sponsor, and even the arts. The authors point out that Lin’s consciousness of dialogue is the key factor for his successful dissemination of Chinese cultures to the West. Then, by tracing back the original roots of Lin’s consciousness of dialogue, the paper digs into his views on Chinese and Western cultures. It is expected to illustrate the applicability of Bakhtin’s dialogism in translation theory and unveil the dialogic nature of Lin’s translation thought as well, hoping to provide some guidance for the contemporary dissemination of Chinese literature and classics.

Women in Eastern culture are often thought of as “the other”. Similarly, feminism in Indonesian literature is also considered a contemporary literary phenomenon in the 21st century. However, according to our research findings, feminism in Indonesian literature has been present since 1901, during Dutch colonialism. Therefore, the purpose of this study is to investigate how feminism is represented in Indonesian literature. The source of this research data is Four Novels by Ki Padmasusastra (FNKP), published between 1901 and 1924. We used qualitative methods to analyze the data. The results showed that FNKP is a postcolonial novel that represents feminism and educational values. Feminism in FNKP was influenced by the Dutch during the colonial period in Indonesia. The authors seek to show that feminism is not at odds with Eastern culture but rather reflects its diversity and complexity. Through literature, the authors seek to educate readers about the similarities and differences between Eastern and Western cultures and how they can coexist in modern society.

This paper investigates the relationship among students’ mindsets, academic performance, English proficiency, and that of their social networks in the Sultanate of Oman. Two main questions were addressed, namely the relationship among the students’ mindset, their social network’s mindset and their academic performance, and the correlation between the students’ proficiency in English and that of their social networks. Results revealed individual’s mindset significantly influences their academic performance. The mindset within an individual’s social network may also affect their academic achievement. Data also suggested that individual mindset has a more dominant role in the students’ academic performance than their social network. The relationship between participants’ English proficiency and their social network revealed inconclusive findings. Given Oman’s Vision 2040 that places a strong emphasis on knowledge-driven society, this study emphasizes the importance of nurturing a growth-oriented mindset within social networks to achieve national educational objectives.

Confixes are affixation phenomena that may affect the class of a word (derivation) or may not change it (inflectional). This study aims to examine the use of confixes (per-/-an and peN-/-an) found in the novel “Laskar Pelangi” by Andrea Hirata. The research employs a corpus linguistic approach through the application of KORTARA (Korpus Nusantara) provided by Universitas Negeri Padang. The application can identify the words based on affixation. The data were collected and then analysed using digital computational linguistic analysis. The findings indicated that the use of per-/-an and peN-/-an in Indonesian functions creates new lexemes as they produce new meanings. Additionally, the study revealed that the addition of per-/-an and peN-/-an confixes changes the verb class of words into a noun class with the meaning of action-process nouns and action nouns. The confixes (per-/-an and peN-/-an) may affect the class of words.

Against this background, Socially and politically important news was selected on the reforms of the Unified Accumulative Pension Fund (UAPF) of Kazakhstan. We considered the issue of the dynamics of the communicative and linguistic transformation of the information occasion in print and online publications of Kazakhstan. Four main stages in the dynamics of news distribution were identified: selection, origin, active dissemination, and extinction. Publications on the topic during the period of active dissemination were classified according to semantic characteristics: description of the actions of official bodies, description of the actions of the people, advice, analytics, and authoritative opinion. In addition, this period was characterized by a wide stylistic range, where the frequent linguistic means were keywords of the topic, verbs of speech, interrogative constructions, orientation metaphors, accurate and approximate numerical data, and evaluative vocabulary.

This stylistic study pays attention to the use of language in literary works, focusing on the use of language that deviates from everyday language or is typical in literary discourse. This paper aims to describe lexical deviations in three novels: Lontara Rindu (LR), Sabda Luka (SL), and Sayat-sayat Sunyi (SSS). They are local novels written by Mappagewa in Indonesian. Content analysis was used for data collection. Data was analyzed using three flows: reduction, data presentation, and drawing precise conclusions. The study shows three forms of deviation: neologisms, connotative forms, and diction. The use of lexical deviation forms is more often found in LR. The deviation aims to show an aesthetic impression and attention from the reader’s point of view. It was found that the author foregrounded the three novels to get tight and concise word forms.

At the same time, edusemiotics finds a theoretical and practical fit with the Analects, both in terms of structural features of the included middle and in terms of the functioning logic of process-ontology. It proves that although Confucius’s classical educational thought has existed and been inherited for more than two thousand years, some of its educational concepts and methods stand at the forefront of the times from the pers-pective of edusemiotics today, and still remain an important guide and reference to the field of human education in this day and age.

This study addresses the gap in research on the interlanguage pragmatic knowledge of Saudi English learners across two proficiency levels. Recognizing the lack of understanding of interlanguage characteristics within the Saudi context, the research conducts a comprehensive examination of interlanguage pragmatic competence in High Achievers students (HAs) and Low Achievers students (LAs). Using a Discourse Completion Task (DCT) that incorporates essential social variables such as power (P) and distance (D), the study aims to elicit supportive moves in request utterances. Findings indicated that HA students significantly employed a wider variety of linguistic patterns in mitigated request utterances in comparison to LAs. HAs demonstrated awareness of both social power and distance in realizing and producing speech acts, while LAs exhibited less consciousness of social variables influencing external modifications. The study further emphasizes the substantial impact of language proficiency on the use of supportive moves among Saudi EFL learners.

The study presents an analysis of affixation in the morphological word-formation context of the English and Kazakh languages. Affixation is the process of adding affixes to the base word, which consequently leads to the formation of new words with changed lexical and grammatical meanings of the derived word. Affixation, having a different impact on the lexical composition of the presented phraseological units, is one of the most important components of word formation. The purpose of the study is to analyze the classification of affixations and their influence on the construction, semantics and grammar of words. A relational analysis of affixes in the two languages was also carried out to identify specificities and differences in the use of affixes. The revealed results enrich the understanding of word formation and linguistic structure in the context of the English and Kazakh languages, thereby modernizing linguistic research and intercultural communication in modern society.

This research explored refusal strategies among 15 Ammani Arabic monolinguals and 15 English-Arabic bilinguals, aiming to uncover cross-cultural variations. Data were collected through a discourse completion test (DCT) following Beebe et al. (1990), featuring scenarios of requests, invitations, suggestions, and offers. Participants respond to each scenario, refusing to individuals of equal, higher, and lower status, shedding light on diverse communication patterns in intercultural contexts. Results showed that Ammani Arabic monolinguals use more direct strategies than English-Arabic bilinguals in refusing requests and suggestions, especially when dealing with lower status. English-Arabic bilinguals use more adjunct strategies when dealing with higher-status people, while Ammani Arabic monolinguals use “care of the interlocutor’s feelings” strategy. Pragma-linguistic failures were observed, revealing differences in the length, content, and order of semantic formulas, showcasing potential challenges in cross-cultural communication. This study’s results can help understand the norms of both languages and be used in language teaching contexts.

In this article, it was determined that the worldview fragments of the ethnos code in mind are stored through non-linguistic information in the content of the concept and toponyms. From this point of view, in addition to the language usages in the works of Seydimbek, the cognitive toponyms themselves have their own characteristics, which are hidden from the history and culture of our people. This study analyzes Biden’s political speech on raising governmental funds as a macro speech act which instantiates the speaker’s purpose behind this discourse. It draws insights from some pragmatics and discourse analysis theories, developed by Austin, Searle, and Van Dijk, as a point of departure to develop an analytical framework with two levels (micro and macro levels) to analyze this political discourse. Despite a great deal of research conducted on speech acts from a pragmatic perspective, very few studies examined speech acts existing in a connected manner (a sequence of speech acts) in political discourse. This study bridges pragmatics and discourse analysis claiming that directives complement expressives, assertives, and commissives. This complementary between these classes built the speaker’s authoritative, affective, persuasive, responsible, and supportive identity that enables him to present his perspective effectively and appealingly. These acts blend into this discourse to form a macro speech act. This macro act represents the intended speaker’s purpose behind this discourse.

Research on comic strip humor in linguistic studies has yet to be done much by scientists. Comic features that convey messages in pictures and words cause linguists to examine humor more in its verbal elements only. This study's objectives were: 1) creating a transcription method that linguists can use to study comics, 2) analyzing how authors create humor, and 3) describing how to understand the purpose of humor in comic strips. The corpus was a comic strip book entitled The Best of Sazae-san (Hasegawa, 2015). The data were analyzed using linguistics, narrative, and humor theories. The study's results found that the transcription method proposed in this study can translate visual into verbal narratives through three elements: The character, setting, and perspective. This research can also show how comic humor is created with a twist in the form of a punch line that subverts readers' expectations, as well as that comic strips' humor, in addition to aiming to entertain, also criticizes.

Interlanguage pragmatic studies predominantly focus on teaching and learning English as a second or foreign language. However, there is a substantial research gap in understanding the interlanguage characteristics of those learning English as a second language, particularly within the Saudi context. To bridge this critical gap, this paper undertakes a comprehensive examination of the interlanguage pragmatic competence exhibited by a cohort of 51 High Achievers (HAs) juxtaposed with 48 Low Achievers (LAs). A Discourse Completion Test (DCT) and the Scale-Response Questionnaire (SRQ) were administered to elicit request utterances. The paper concludes that HAs tended to use a wide range of linguistic forms in using mitigated request expressions significantly compared to LAs’ performance. Regarding the influence of contextual variables, HAs showed more awareness of both social power and distance compared to LAs. In conclusion, there is a robust connection between language proficiency and the pragmatic competence of request acts among Saudi learners.
