Ceremonies, rituals, and symbolism are integral to preserving Javanese culture. Symbolism, deeply woven into traditional ceremonies, reflects the essence of Javanese philosophy and cultural values, as well as life guidelines, particularly evident in the tedhak siten ceremony. This article, thus, aims to delve into the linguistic and symbolic intricacies of the traditional ceremonial processions, tedhak siten, and its elements, such as ubarampe, embodying parents’ heartfelt prayers and aspirations for their children. This qualitative research adopts an ethnolinguistic approach, employing observation, interviews, and literature studies to reveal that these ceremonies constitute a vital part of the Javanese life cycle, specifically in the birth phase. Employing Hofstede’s cultural dimensions, the results of this article show that the ceremony exhibits hierarchical structures, collective participation, gender balance, and structured processes. Ultimately, the tedhak siten ceremony signifies the Javanese community’s prudence, portraying acceptance, introduction, and fervent hopes for a prosperous life for the child.

Cultural literacy is a very important vehicle in strengthening the identity of a nation. Without cultural literacy skills, students will lose their identity and be uprooted from their character even though character education is the main program being promoted by the government. To overcome this, folklore as a literary work that is full of cultural values and local wisdom should be strengthened in its learning. One of the steps taken in this research is to use mixed reality-based media to teach folklore in elementary schools. This experimental research was conducted in 16 elementary schools in six districts in West Java involving 418 students. Cultural literacy skills were measured by valid and reliable instruments. The results of this study indicated that the use of mixed reality folklore media can improve students’ cultural literacy skills. The dimension of cultural literacy that increased the most was the dimension of cultural knowledge, while the dimensions of cultural attitudes and behavior did not increase much. Therefore, by implication, the proposed mixed reality folklore media can be used to improve students’ cultural literacy skills in West Java.

The current paper is devoted to studying the lexical components variations of the binary opposition man–woman on the material of Russian and English paroemias in the linguoculturological aspect that is particularly valuable for cross-cultural and contrastive studies. The data were revealed by using continuous sampling from different sources, including published collections and dictionaries of proverbs and sayings, and online references. The study aims to review and describe such expressions by identifying lexical components. This makes it possible to reveal the verbalization of the binary construction man–woman in more detail. Among other things, the research is based on a contrastive analysis of paroemias. The authors focus on considering the semantic categories of the opposition of examined binary constructions within selected proverb samples to identify similar and special aspects in both linguocultures. The feasibility of using this methodological approach enables a comprehensive examination of how the binary opposition man–woman is realized within paroemiological contexts of both Russian and English languages.

This study addresses the gap in research on the interlanguage pragmatic knowledge of Saudi English learners across two proficiency levels. Recognizing the lack of understanding of interlanguage characteristics within the Saudi context, the research conducts a comprehensive examination of interlanguage pragmatic competence in High Achievers students (HAs) and Low Achievers students (LAs). Using a Discourse Completion Task (DCT) that incorporates essential social variables such as power (P) and distance (D), the study aims to elicit supportive moves in request utterances. Findings indicated that HA students significantly employed a wider variety of linguistic patterns in mitigated request utterances in comparison to LAs. HAs demonstrated awareness of both social power and distance in realizing and producing speech acts, while LAs exhibited less consciousness of social variables influencing external modifications. The study further emphasizes the substantial impact of language proficiency on the use of supportive moves among Saudi EFL learners.

This study examines the impact of COVID-19 on Jordanians’ beliefs, perceptions, and practices. The selected 26 caricatures and memes were analyzed in terms of their denotative, connotative, and semiotic resources and discussed in light of Barthes’ semiotic theory. The analysis reveals that such cartoonic representations constitute a type of social discourse that reveals several social, health, economic, and political issues on digital platforms and warns people about the negative consequences of this pandemic and how to cope with it. These issues are life and economic disruption, people’s bad psychological state, the unfair hold of the COVID-19 vaccine diffusion, and the world’s fiasco in handling the pandemic. The cartoons and memes also represent effectively, with the help of particular linguistic techniques (i.e., metaphors, intertextuality, and ironic, sarcastic expressions), people’s thoughts and beliefs, real situations, events, personalities, and identities, as well as the whole world, by humorously demonstrating critically shared global issues.

The study presents an analysis of affixation in the morphological word-formation context of the English and Kazakh languages. Affixation is the process of adding affixes to the base word, which consequently leads to the formation of new words with changed lexical and grammatical meanings of the derived word. Affixation, having a different impact on the lexical composition of the presented phraseological units, is one of the most important components of word formation. The purpose of the study is to analyze the classification of affixations and their influence on the construction, semantics and grammar of words. A relational analysis of affixes in the two languages was also carried out to identify specificities and differences in the use of affixes. The revealed results enrich the understanding of word formation and linguistic structure in the context of the English and Kazakh languages, thereby modernizing linguistic research and intercultural communication in modern society.

This research explored refusal strategies among 15 Ammani Arabic monolinguals and 15 English-Arabic bilinguals, aiming to uncover cross-cultural variations. Data were collected through a discourse completion test (DCT) following Beebe et al. (1990), featuring scenarios of requests, invitations, suggestions, and offers. Participants respond to each scenario, refusing to individuals of equal, higher, and lower status, shedding light on diverse communication patterns in intercultural contexts. Results showed that Ammani Arabic monolinguals use more direct strategies than English-Arabic bilinguals in refusing requests and suggestions, especially when dealing with lower status. English-Arabic bilinguals use more adjunct strategies when dealing with higher-status people, while Ammani Arabic monolinguals use “care of the interlocutor’s feelings” strategy. Pragma-linguistic failures were observed, revealing differences in the length, content, and order of semantic formulas, showcasing potential challenges in cross-cultural communication. This study’s results can help understand the norms of both languages and be used in language teaching contexts.

In this article, it was determined that the worldview fragments of the ethnos code in mind are stored through non-linguistic information in the content of the concept and toponyms. From this point of view, in addition to the language usages in the works of Seydimbek, the cognitive toponyms themselves have their own characteristics, which are hidden from the history and culture of our people. It was mentioned that the model structure of the “field concept” in the Saryarka plain includes various associations and a set of indigenous knowledge. The richness of the Saryarka toponym reflects not only the physical attributes of the region but also the deep-seated cultural and spiritual connections of the Kazakh people to their environment. The main purpose of the study was to show concepts in the toponymic space of Seydimbek’s works in a set of various associations and background knowledge to the model structure of the concept of “Uly Dala” in the Saryarka plain.

This study analyzes Biden’s political speech on raising governmental funds as a macro speech act which instantiates the speaker’s purpose behind this discourse. It draws insights from some pragmatics and discourse analysis theories, developed by Austin, Searle, and Van Dijk, as a point of departure to develop an analytical framework with two levels (micro and macro levels) to analyze this political discourse. Despite a great deal of research conducted on speech acts from a pragmatic perspective, very few studies examined speech acts existing in a connected manner (a sequence of speech acts) in political discourse. This study bridges pragmatics and discourse analysis claiming that directives complement expressives, assertives, and commissives. This complementary between these classes built the speaker’s authoritative, affective, persuasive, responsible, and supportive identity that enables him to present his perspective effectively and appealingly. These acts blend into this discourse to form a macro speech act. This macro act represents the intended speaker’s purpose behind this discourse.

Research on comic strip humor in linguistic studies has yet to be done much by scientists. Comic features that convey messages in pictures and words cause linguists to examine humor more in its verbal elements only. This study's objectives were: 1) creating a transcription method that linguists can use to study comics, 2) analyzing how authors create humor, and 3) describing how to understand the purpose of humor in comic strips. The corpus was a comic strip book entitled The Best of Sazae-san (Hasegawa, 2015). The data were analyzed using linguistics, narrative, and humor theories. The study's results found that the transcription method proposed in this study can translate visual into verbal narratives through three elements: The character, setting, and perspective. This research can also show how comic humor is created with a twist in the form of a punch line that subverts readers' expectations, as well as that comic strips' humor, in addition to aiming to entertain, also criticizes.

Interlanguage pragmatic studies predominantly focus on teaching and learning English as a second or foreign language. However, there is a substantial research gap in understanding the interlanguage characteristics of those learning English as a second language, particularly within the Saudi context. To bridge this critical gap, this paper undertakes a comprehensive examination of the interlanguage pragmatic competence exhibited by a cohort of 51 High Achievers (HAs) juxtaposed with 48 Low Achievers (LAs). A Discourse Completion Test (DCT) and the Scale-Response Questionnaire (SRQ) were administered to elicit request utterances. The paper concludes that HAs tended to use a wide range of linguistic forms in using mitigated request expressions significantly compared to LAs’ performance. Regarding the influence of contextual variables, HAs showed more awareness of both social power and distance compared to LAs. In conclusion, there is a robust connection between language proficiency and the pragmatic competence of request acts among Saudi learners.

The manners or social conduct of refusal is an invaluable part of Japanese culture that youngsters can learn by observing anime. The present research aimed to elaborate on how Japanese anime might provide insights for youngsters to learn polite refusal strategies. This research relied heavily on dialogue transcripts from the anime Kaguya-Sama: Love is War as the data source. The methods for collecting data in this research included simple and complex recording, participant observation, and active engagement. Data analysis was done through thorough observation and auto-expert judgments. The research findings showed that there were two types of refusal speech-act strategies: direct speech acts and indirect speech acts. The direct speech-act politeness strategies employed direct non-performative verbs within refusal speech acts, while the indirect speech-act politeness strategies consisted of refusal speech acts through presenting reasons, refusal speech acts with a statement of principles, refusal speech acts with a statement of apology, and refusal speech acts with a way of evasion.
