Aptitude testing is a valuable tool for assessing individuals’ potential and predicting their performance in various settings. However, current tests may not fully capture individuals’ range of abilities and tend to focus on specific cognitive constructs, ignoring non-cognitive ones. To address this gap, this article suggests incorporating cultural and emo-sensory constructs into general and foreign language aptitude testing. The newly developed Pishghadam Language-based General Aptitude Test (PL-GAT) measures a wide range of cognitive abilities, including attention, verbal and nonverbal reasoning, memory, and critical thinking, along with non-cognitive abilities, such as emotion, culture, and sense. Concurrently, this dual-purpose test provides an evaluation of individuals’ foreign language aptitude as well. The integration of these constructs provides a more accurate and comprehensive assessment of individuals’ potential, allowing them to understand their strengths and weaknesses better. Additionally, organizations can make more informed decisions when selecting candidates for academic or career purposes.

The article is devoted to the study of the history of the Kazakh detective genre. Indeed, there are a lot of controversial statements when it comes to the genre. In Kazakh literature, in-depth and detailed studies of the detective genre have not yet been carried out, so the problems associated with this remain unresolved. In national literature, the detective genre is one of the most underdeveloped. Furthermore, the challenges within the detective genre, which still remain unmastered and are evolving gradually, are being examined. This controversial issue is very important for specialists in the field of literature and university students. In this context, an exploration of the history of the Kazakh detective genre is undertaken using literary reviews and interview methodologies accompanied by thematic analysis. At last, we clarify the reasons why the detective genre has not yet been studied and summed up conclusions.

This study examines the effectiveness of reflective writing pedagogy and elucidates students’ plagiarism behavior, causality, and compositional resources. Drawing on a mixed-methods sequential exploratory design, it addresses the problem of student plagiarism using second-semester graduate students at IAIN Palopo, Indonesia, as a sample and data collected via writing tests, interviews, and documentation studies using Turnitin software. A combination of descriptive and inferential statistical methods was used for evaluation, and a qualitative description was used to analyze the behavior and needs. The results show a 33.13% decrease in plagiarism following attendance of reflective writing classes, with a considerable value of 0.001. Students’ most ubiquitous form of plagiarism was direct quotations without proper citations. The factors driving plagiarism include difficulties with paraphrasing, crafting coherent paragraphs, time constraints, and incorrect utilization of Turnitin software. The study concludes that reflective-writing instructions are imperative for reducing plagiarism propensity as students require writing guidance.

The role of age in determining speakers’ politeness strategy is a crucial aspect of language use, and this paper examines the politeness phenomena in the Luwu Tae’ language.This study used a descriptive quantitative approach and a newly developed social relation symmetry model to collect data from 15 respondents and investigate how age influences the use of politeness strategies. The study found that when interacting with older interlocutors, speakers tend to use a more deferential variety and employ a negative politeness strategy. However, when speaking with people of their own age, speakers tend to use a more informal style and employ a positive politeness technique. These findings suggest that age is a significant factor in determining politeness strategies among the Luwu Tae’ language ethnic groups, with the local wisdom of treating everyone with respect and behaving nicely being a key factor passed down from generation to generation. Age has become an important social variable of power influencing politeness techniques in the region.

The previous three decades have seen a growing body of research into interlanguage pragmatics (ILP), language proficiency, and their effects on pragmatic competence. One of the most important independent aspects in the field of ILP development is language ability. This study which involved 98 Saudi learners, was conducted to determine whether there was a relationship between language proficiency and pragmatic production and realization. This study depended basically on the Cross-Cultural Speech Act Realization Pattern and politeness theory to analyze the gathered data using a Discourse Completion Task. Findings showed that there were no statistically significant differences in the Directness Level according to the variable of proficiency between the two groups. However, there were statistically significant differences in Conventionally Indirect in producing request acts. Regarding Non-Conventionally Indirect, only the high achiever group employed this strategy. Furthermore, results indicated that language proficiency had a significant influence on Saudi EFL learners’ production and comprehension of the request act.

So far, the study of magical realism in literature has been limited to the relationship of literature to the chronology of text creation. There have been no studies linking the imagination of magical realism and the reader effect, especially the content of educational values. Therefore, the purpose of this study is to investigate the values of education in the literature of magical realism. This research uses semiotic methods, content analysis, and hermeneutics. The primary data source is Danarto Asmaraloka’s novel. The results showed that Asmaraloka is a literature that creates a complex world. It represents reality and fantasy that rejects simple and exclusive binary and postmodernist views. The magical realism in Asmaraloka encompasses certain cultural traditions and universal aspects. At the same time, Asmaraloka provides educational values about freedom. An important im-plication of this research is that literature can be a medium of expression that simultaneously guides readers about freedom.

The article focuses on the axiological dominants of Kazakh and English-speaking cultures in the virtual world. The authors analyze the valuable national picture of the world in ordinary virtual discourse by considering the parameters of tradition and innovation in text formation. They collected and analyzed Internet comments using linguocultural and linguoaxiological methods to identify the linguocultural units that reflect the value markers of Internet commentary. These units include verbalized mythologemes, phraseological and paremiological units, poetic features, and nationally specific units that reveal the value basis of both cultures and are indicators of their axiological dominants. The study found two additional parameters of the value marker, “Bata - national peculiarity” unique to the Kazakh culture, and “IQ peculiarity” unique to the English culture. Overall, the study highlights the importance of understanding the axiological dominants of linguocultures in the virtual space.

E-learning has recently gained a tremendous amount of attention worldwide; however, this phenomenon has not been studied much from the viewpoints of its immediate beneficiaries (i.e., students and teachers). This systematic review aimed at creating a conceptual framework consisting of the most significant problems and challenges vs. opportunities and solutions associated with e-learning. In doing so, we established a corpus of post-pandemic articles. Out of 2126 original research articles published between March 2020 and March 2022, 13 were included. These sources were obtained through MetSearch and were representative of 14 countries, 2726 student participants, and 1374 educator participants. Through thematic analysis, each document was categorized under certain themes. Technical, physical, mental, interaction, assessment, and pedagogical issues, as well as proper training, IT literacy, and additional burdens on students and educators, were the main challenges and problems found in association with e-learning. The opportunities and solutions included improvements in communication, interaction, teaching, and learning, as well as accessibility, convenience, productivity, and safety.

Indonesian Language for Foreign Speakers (BIPA) is an Indonesian language learning aimed at foreigners. The most challenging part for foreign speakers in BIPA learning is understanding the morphological processes. This study aimed to describe the prefix /me-/ used by foreign speakers in terms of productivity, allomorphy, and usage. This research was conducted at Yale University, USA, in 2022. The conclusions of this research were (1) The process of affixation of the prefix /me-/ produced six allomorphs; (2) There was the assimilation of the first letters /k/, /p/, /s/, and /t/ in the affixation process; (3) There were four forms that appeared in the form of single words, concatenated words, compound words, and repeated words; (4) There were twelve kinds of meanings produced; (5) There was allomorph /meng-/, which was not in accordance with the Indonesian language rules; and (6) The prefix /me-/ was omitted in everyday conversation in informal situations.

The purpose of the article was to study and identify linguistic and cultural features of the concepts of “authority” and “politics” in the materials of Kazakh, Russian, and English. Based on the definitions of the term “concept” in linguistic studies, the semantic and structural description of the words “authority” and “politics” was given regarding the relationship between linguistic and conceptual images of the world. To identify the national features of these two concepts, a survey was conducted using the associative experimental method. The survey was attended by 1000 respondents who spoke Kazakh, English, and Russian. After analyzing the results, substantive features of these concepts in the consciousness of owners of these languages were described and distinguished. The scientific value of the research work was determined by complementing the conclusions of the work in the direction of linguoculturology, and its practical value was determined by providing specific materials for comparative analysis.

In the real world, each word within a language carries a simple referential meaning. Yet, there exist intricate semantic relationships, all of which may vary depending on the various linguistic contexts. In this paper, I explore two main color terms, red and black, in terms of their semantic relationships between English and Arabic. In fact, this paper discusses different kinds of meanings (i.e., denotational and connotational) and semantics relations (i.e., paradigmatic and syntagmatic) of the two terms red and black in English. Afterward, a comparison of the findings is expounded, elucidating the semantic nuances and pragmatic applications of these terms within the Arabic language– my native tongue. The results revealed that in English, red and black carry some semantic meanings similar to Arabic. These similarities arise from universal beliefs. However, the diversity of linguistic and cultural influences results in distinct semantic relations of these color terms in the two languages.

The article studies the classification of binary oppositional pairs found in the medieval Codex Cumanicus written monument from a linguistic point of view. The Codex Cumanicus is a Latin manuscript of religious texts and dictionaries written in Kypchak, a Turkic language. The medieval written monument provides a lot of information about that time. In addition, we notice that the monument is closely related to the language and culture of Turkic people today. Through a comprehensive linguistic analysis, the study examines how human perception of binary oppositional pairs in the Codex Cumanicus reveals contrasting world-views. The article also investigates the role of binary oppositional pairs in constructing the linguistic picture of the world, exploring their cognitive implications. Furthermore, the study conducts a classification analysis of these pairs within the written monument and explores their continued usage and cognitive relevance in the modern Kazakh language.

This research describes the linguistic adaptation of Bali transmigrants on the mainland of Southeast Sulawesi, specifically in relation to phonological, morphological, grammatical, loanword, and language proficiency aspects. To address these issues, data collection methods such as interviews, observations, and surveys were employed. The results of the research indicated that the linguistic adaptation of Bali transmigrants can be observed phonologically, with the disappearance of retroflex sounds /t/ and /d/ among the younger generation. Generally, Bali transmigrants have limited knowledge of standardized Bali vocabulary, as evidenced by imprecise word usage. Morphologically, the formation of words combines Indonesian root forms with Balinese affixes. In terms of syntax, the use of Indonesian sentences is often accompanied by particles such as ji, mi, toh, and ki, along with the distinctive intonation of the local ethnic group. Vocabulary borrowing, particularly related to agriculture, was also commonly observed. Proficiency in colloquial language was more dominant than in formal language. Most participants were unfamiliar with formal Balinese vocabulary.

This article examines contemporary sociolinguistic issues related to the state language, including compliance with traditional norms of the national literary language, the identification of leading trends in language development, and the collection and systematization of ways of speech delivery in communicative practice. Through a linguistic anthropocentric lens, the article revises the concepts of Kazakh speech culture and scientific principles, emphasiz-ing the importance of unifying and normalizing language norms to improve language culture among users, enrich the language, and ensure the full functioning of the Kazakh language as the state language. The article also explores the relationships between norms, language norms, literary norms, and usus, highlighting distinctive features and peculiarities characterizing norms, including traditional and internal dynamic ones. The frequency of linguistic facts in determining the difference between norm and usus was also investigated as the main criteria.

Cigawiran is an Indonesian oral tradition that has Islamic religious values and messages. It is only found and developed in a limited location, namely Cigawir village. Regarding the limitation of Cigawiran spreading, this article examined its vitality and cultural values. Oral tradition and vitality research methodologies were utilized in this study. The concept of oral tradition vitality was derived from the theoretical frameworks proposed by Grimes, which shares similarities with the notion of language vitality and encompasses six distinct categories that assess the vitality level within oral traditions. The data was gathered through a questionnaire. The findings of the vitality study indicated that the Cigawiran is classified as stable yet facing threats. This suggests that the tradition is practiced by the entire local community, albeit selectively among specific generations. The study suggests that there is a need for the revival of the Cigawiran because this practice has been limited to a small number of generations up to the present time.

This article aims to explore pedagogical technologies used to develop the language competence of students based on the verbal-semantic level of the linguistic personality. With socio-political and economic changes in Kazakhstan, individualizing education has become a crucial aspect of improving personal training quality at all levels. Language centers on linguistic personality, which accumulates values of linguistic, cultural, and communicative knowledge. Language and words are revealed in modern anthropologically relevant levels of linguistic science through language cognition and participial communication. This article introduces a number of techniques and strategies on how to increase students’ linguistic competence through linguistic personalities. To this aim, Auezov’s literary works were considered a source of inspiration on how to help students to enhance their linguistic competence. In the end, some suggestions were made on how to use linguistic personality in language education.

The study aims at analyzing politeness and gender around the postponement of election discourse in the Rosi Talk Show (RTS). This qualitative study applies a pragmatic approach that investigates hedge markers (HM). Data were collected from the utterances of nine participants using basic tapping, free-flowing listening, and note-taking. The results indicated several findings. First, academics (males) represented hedge markers with assertive acts of expressing an opinion. However, the practitioner (female) tended to use directive acts of questioning. Second, academics and practitioners (males) often used hedges for quality maxims. While the practitioner (female) often used hedges with question tags. Third, the function of HM showed performative hedges as hesitation and meta-comments; particles to emphasize questions, soften act, and give flexibility; adverbial clauses to show cause-effect and conditions; hedges to quality maxims to show hesitation, raise objections, minimize criticism, and other corrections; hedges to relevance maxims as allegation and hesitation; and hedges in politeness as indifference, rejection, and avoidance.

The purpose of this article is to review modern research in the field of multilingualism in terms of the main problems and issues related to the definition of the concept of multi-lingualism, and its main types and elements. The article discusses various forms of the existence of multilingualism and discusses the problems associated with various scientific ideas about multilingualism, a multilingual individual, and its main characteristics. An analysis of the language situation in the Republic of Kazakhstan is also carried out based on the results of the population census 2021, features of the functioning, and interaction of languages in the multinational Republic of Kazakhstan. The article contains quantitative data related to the composition of the population; the level of proficiency in the Kazakh, Russian, and English languages as well as the language of their ethnic group; the level of trilingual proficiency of the population (Kazakh, Russian, and English); the specifics of the development of the state language on the Internet, etc.

This research investigates the combination of the languages utilized on restaurant signs in Ubud, Bali, Indonesia. Among 279 collected data, it is found that three languages are mostly utilized for communication. Those languages are Balinese, Indonesian, and English. As the second result of the analysis, it is found that most of the collected signs combine Balinese and English as well as Indonesian and English. These combinations show that English dominates the communication system in public settings. Meanwhile, Balinese and Indonesian normally serve as part of the naming system on those signs. These two results conclude that Balinese and Indonesian still need to be introduced to obtain an equal position as the English language. Utilizing Balinese and Indonesian on public signs is one of the most practical solutions for providing them with public exposure. The presence of local languages on public signs combined with English is a mutually beneficial strategy for both business aspects and preserving local language and culture.

This research studies the various barriers that impede Jordanian female academics’ advancement into leadership positions with a focus on the attainment of internationally funded projects. By examining the case of Yarmouk University in Jordan, the study inspects a new “glass ceiling” which women face in leadership positions and the field of international projects in academic institutions. It investigates the many obstacles that female academics face as applicants, participants, and leaders of internationally funded academic projects. With a focus on the personal and academic experiences of Jordanian female academics from Yarmouk University, the study highlights a number of social, cultural, administrative, academic, and personal barriers that hinder their presence as leaders of international projects. While much has been written about women and leadership in higher education in different parts of the world, the very focus on specific leadership opportunities is still lacking in recent research. Therefore, this study comes to fill a significant gap in research about female leadership in the academe.

The article examined the cognitive and linguistic features of the “altyn/gold” concept in Kazakh and English paremiology. The importance of the analysis of paremias in recognition of the concept is related to the fact that these proverbs provide the main value orientations of each people, and they appear as a type of condensed national cultural texts. As a result of the study, differences in phraseological units of the Kazakh and English languages in the interpretation of the concept of altyn/gold were revealed from the analysis of linguocreative, pragmatic, and linguocultural factors. The cognitive nature of culturally marked linguistic units, which determine the cultural character of the two nations in the linguistic image of the world, was determined by studying Kazakh linguistic and cultural knowledge and the “gold” component of the English national identity within the framework of the linguoconceptual paradigm of paremias.

The issue of character is an important global issue to be pursued together. This study examines the educational values in Serat Sari Swara by Ki Hadjar Dewantara (KHD). The research used qualitative methods focused on hermeneutic analysis. The source of the data is Serat Sari Swara published in 1930. The results showed that Serat Sari Swara represents the values of character education. Character education values include working hard, obeying rules, living simply, patiently, conscientiously, and sincerely, courteously, courteously, and religiously. Serat Sari Swara, as an influential cultural product, not only entertains but also serves as a medium to instill positive virtues in society. These values are influenced by Javanese culture as the origin of the authors. An important implication of the research is that swara sari fiber can be a medium for character education for students and the wider community. This is expected to contribute to efforts to deal with character problems in a global context.

The current paper is devoted to studying the lexical components variations of the binary opposition man–woman on the material of Russian and English paroemias in the linguoculturological aspect that is particularly valuable for cross-cultural and contrastive studies. The data were revealed by using continuous sampling from different sources, including published collections and dictionaries of proverbs and sayings, and online references. The study aims to review and describe such expressions by identifying lexical components. This makes it possible to reveal the verbalization of the binary construction man–woman in more detail. Among other things, the research is based on a contrastive analysis of paroemias. The authors focus on considering the semantic categories of the opposition of examined binary constructions within selected proverb samples to identify similar and special aspects in both linguocultures. The feasibility of using this methodological approach enables a comprehensive examination of how the binary opposition man–woman is realized within paroemiological contexts of both Russian and English languages.

This study examines the impact of COVID-19 on Jordanians’ beliefs, perceptions, and practices. The selected 26 caricatures and memes were analyzed in terms of their denotative, connotative, and semiotic resources and discussed in light of Barthes’ semiotic theory. The analysis reveals that such cartoonic representations constitute a type of social discourse that reveals several social, health, economic, and political issues on digital platforms and warns people about the negative consequences of this pandemic and how to cope with it. These issues are life and economic disruption, people’s bad psychological state, the unfair hold of the COVID-19 vaccine diffusion, and the world’s fiasco in handling the pandemic. The cartoons and memes also represent effectively, with the help of particular linguistic techniques (i.e., metaphors, intertextuality, and ironic, sarcastic expressions), people’s thoughts and beliefs, real situations, events, personalities, and identities, as well as the whole world, by humorously demonstrating critically shared global issues.
